Great Post. Twitter is still a nebulous technology for many people, so I love seeing quality articles on Twitter that demystify it. I have linked to this article on my Friday Marketing Tips Around The Net post. Keep up the good work!

Question!
I run totallytheatre.com a UK based Theatre club. We film a lot of celebrities and stars behind the scenes so i have an interesting question before i set up out twitter id.
Should it be totallytheatre or Richard Hardwick? I believe the personal id would allow me to reveal more of the interesting things but is it still promoting our brand enough? I wouldn't twitter anything that would be invasive but does it weaken our brand if i appear to be a gossip?

I appreciate your answers!

Tip number 11. Don't bother.

If you join Twitter with the sole intention of marketing a product, I don't think you'll get far. You'll wind up with few followers because most will quickly work out what you're doing - like one of those guys who follows 1000 people but has only 200 followers himself. He's not quite a spammer, but 800 people have sussed out that he's only in it for what he can get out of it, and the other 200 either haven't noticed yet or are trying to market things to him.

When I use Twitter, I do tweet about my business now and then, but mostly in passing. Most of the time I try to tweet about other interesting stuff and join conversations. As a result, my list of followers is of a high quality and growing steadily. I've won a reasonable wedge of new business (>£8,000) that I wouldn't have had without Twitter.
