My Extreme Makeover: Twitter Edition

By Rebecca Maxwell of My Adventures in History – Follow her @rmaxwell142.

bathroomremodelCall me old fashioned, but I am one of those people that value community and relationships with people. As a child of the 90’s, I’ve learned to adapt to our technological age where we can keep up-to-date with people without ever seeing them in person. While this is not my preferred method of contact, the last couple of years I have seen myself rely more and more on online interaction than face-to-face. Recently though, I’ve been frustrated with the alienation of social networking sites to the point of taking some extreme measures, especially regarding Twitter.

I originally signed up for Twitter as a way to keep in touch with those interested in my history blog and network with those who have blogs similar to mine. As more and more of my friends on Twitter found me, I found myself following and being followed by people I knew in real life. While this wasn’t bad at first, I soon found myself “unfollowed” by those I was following. People I knew in real life wouldn’t follow me. Then, of course, people who knew nothing about me or my blog began to follow me out of the blue. (more…)

More Free Twitter Icons and Badges

A while back we posted 181 Free Twitter Buttons, Badges, Widget and Counters to Help You Find Followers and now I just received notice of another great site to help you find even more free icons, badges, and graphic snippets to help you advertise your Twitter account on your website or social networking profile.

twitterlogoscom107

TwitterLogos boasts “the largest collection” but also allows graphic designers to submit their work to be featured on the site and get free advertising. There are many that I’ve seen before elsewhere, but many more that I haven’t. Check out this one, which would be great for anyone in the medical field.

Just a note: There are some in there that I noticed, especially those from Flickr, that are marked “All rights reserved.” So be careful… but most of them seem to be alright for use.

Play Bingo On Twitter, Win Free Prizes

Here’s a little something fun to help you get over the “hump” of the week! I received this press release a few weeks ago, looks like something fun to play with.

twibingoOur Free Twitter Bingo Game can win you a free Asus Eee PC with more great prizes to follow!

Combining the popularity of Twitter and bingo, Twibingo is a FREE online bingo game that utilizes the Twitter platform to give away prizes like TVs, gaming consoles, computers and plenty more.

TwiBingoTM was created to give people a fun, easy and free game to play while they’re following their friends and family on Twitter. Every 30 minutes a new number will be drawn and announced as a Tweet as well as on TwiBingo.com. Participants can then visit TwiBingo.com to check the status of their play board and perhaps even get a TwiBingo! The first player with a Twibingo to click the “WINNER” button that appears only to winners will be entered to win the weekly Grand Prize. Other people with winning boards will be able to claim 2nd Place Prizes of the day (Twenty 2nd place prizes will be awarded weekly).

Throughout the week, TwiBingo will provide a variety of entertaining ways for TwiBingo players to increase their odds of winning by getting an additional free space simply by watching a movie trailer or playing with a second board from one of our sponsors. These methods will entice people to monitor their games closely since the bonus will only be available until the next number is drawn, as well as provide a great way for companies to advertise to TwiBingoTM players.

With an exciting line up of prizes, we’re sure people will have a great time playing TwiBingoTM. They can login in to play at Twibingo.com.

The rules seem simple and I believe it uses OAuth to sign you in, so there’s no entering of your username and password (thus no risk of compromising your account). Enjoy!

By Joe Mescher of Social Media Commando. Follow him @JoeMescher.

How would you like to end the debate that ‘Twitter is just for sharing what you had for lunch’ once and for all?  This post is about how to use Twitter for a common good, much like I’m doing with the help of my Tweeps in Burlington, VT.

The whole project started with a simple idea, my Twitter handle, and a few hundred interested followers… (more…)

In Life Timing Is Everything, On Twitter It’s More Important Than That

By Nick Parkin of Pimlico Flats. Follow him @pimlico_flats.

It’s a common expression that in life, timing is everything. On Twitter, nobody tells you that your effectiveness is more dependent on timing that any other online activity.

Time your reading.

Beginners always think that twitter involves reading everything. If you want to give up your life do that by all means, but sensible people will limit their reading to appropriate times and ways.

Rather than becoming a slave to other people’s tweets, read at a time of your choice. (more…)

5 Methods I Used To Get A Job Through Twitter

By Jade Craven – Follow her @jadecraven.

2 days ago, I met my friend Sam Mutimer (@sammutimer) for lunch. We talked about blogging, conferences and social media over lunch. I left with the opportunity to work with her team at Thinktank Media (@thinktankmedia) when they roll out strategies for new clients.

I was quite surprised – especially as I use twitter to hang out and connecting with awesome people when I have the time.

How I Got The Job

I don’t remember how I met Sam, but she soon encouraged me to go the the tweetup she founded called Tweetupmellers(@tweetupmellers) . She was great at getting me to talk to new people and was really encouraging.

I kept in touch with Sam, helping her out and just talking about her projects. I also focused on connecting with more people from the tweetupmellers community. (more…)

10 Ways To Avoid Being Sued On Twitter

Let me cut to the chase. You DO NOT want to be sued on Twitter.

Being sued already stinks enough. Trust me. I know all about this because I’m a lawyer and I sue people for a living (don’t hold it against me).

But being sued for a tweet is even worse.

First off, think of what your friends will say.  “Hi John, have you seen Bill lately?” “No, he was drunk-tweeting so he got sued.”  Imagine the harassment you’d experience at the hands of your buddies.  I shudder to even think about it!

Second, imagine what your customers will say when they read about it online and the headline reads, “Drunk Twit Gets Sued For Tweets.” Think they’re going to hire you again? Probably not.

Worst of all, you could lose your privilege to Tweet under Twitter’s Terms of Service. And that would mean the end of world undoubtedly.

So how do you avoid this?  I’m going to show you 10 basic ways to avoid being sued on Twitter. (more…)

Answer A Reader Question: My Twitter Account Was Phished!

With the recent rash of people falling victim to phishing scams on Twitter, in comes this question by a reader regarding her account being compromised.

Hi there. My twitter account was a victim of phishing. Twitter suspended my account because of it. I have sent them a request to lift my suspension but haven’t heard from them the last 5 days since I lodged the request. Any tips on how I can get them to respond to my request?

Please keep in mind that telling her to avoid clicking links or entering their info into a random site is pretty much a moot point at this time. I think she’s pretty aware of that by now. What would you do in this situation, though?

cbl-singing-bluebird-artDon’t let social media networks stop you from face-to-face communications – facilitate this new dimension as a stepping stone to enhance dialogue.

In a growing remote-administration society, more professionals are operational from their home offices opposed to public workspaces. Much of this has to do with the fact that a lot of what can be accomplished in a virtual office setting can be administered from your personal laptop, PC, or Mac. Whether you’re the Website administrator, analyst, the online marketing sales consultant, web copy writer, or the social media wiz, most of your efforts can be conducted from the Internet window on your desk – your computer screen, that is. The Proper Way to Pitch on Twitter

By Nathan Hangen, follow him @nhangen.

spamI can’t help it…sometimes my Twitter feed makes me want to scream. I’m reading through my DM’s and wondering what people are thinking when they send me this stuff. I don’t want to make 4,000 per month with Twitter (I do this fine on my own thank you), I don’t need 1,000 followers by the time I wake up, and I don’t need any gifts, free-reports, or webinars. Look, there is absolutely nothing wrong with pitching people on Twitter, but this DM madness has got to stop. (more…)
