6 “REAL” Reasons Why Followers Follow

by Fredrickus Williford of CalendarTweet – Follow him @BlackMediaProp

With all the “Gain 20 Trillion Followers” or “Twitter Follower Secrets Revealed” ads or tweets themselves all over the net these days I think its only fair to bring light to a more humorous, but true side of how most Twitter users gain followers. Without further suspense here are the 6 REAL reasons why Followers Follow:

1. Because they’re a follow whore! Meaning they follow anybody in the hopes they will get a follow back.

2. You just might actually have something interesting to say…that’s a big might!

3. You either have Internet fame or you’re some form of celebrity outside of Twitter.com

4. You’re one of the people that Twitter automatically recommends an user adds when they first sign up for Twitter. Basically meaning your one of the “Toms” of Twitter.com

5. You were tagged in the #FollowFridays train. Which in this case you probably have internet fame and just joined Twitter.com or either have something VERY interesting to say or your friends were tired of you stealing all their followers and/or watch your follower count lingering below the double digit count

6. Because you used a Twitter spammer site like twitterfollower.com or the others. If you don’t understand that refer to “Real” reason number 1.

7. Bonus: Because you’re behind the development of a Twitter application, which automatically follows a user and has them follow you. (Okay I’m guilty of this one :-) )

If you don’t embody either one of these then the chances of you getting a follow are slim to none…:(, but there’s still hope Oprah just crossed a million followers in less than 30 days and she hasn’t updated her account, but 45 times.

Funny and true! We all hope to actually be interesting but for the most part people are greedy–they follow to get followed back :)

I actually try to limit the number of people I follow to those I think will actually care or find value in what I tweet–otherwise what is the point?

  • May 19, 2009

You forgot #8 – because you’re a hot girl who can’t spell and you are giving away a free laptop… fer realz, LOL.

  • May 19, 2009

    sean…thats def true..lol..ifollowed a few of them myself…;)

  • May 19, 2009

haha at the twitter follower – yea those are most likely the reasons but can’t beat others that follow you though, they do provide you with interests

  • May 19, 2009

LOL not to be to down but this is probably the worst and most un-informative post I have seen on twitip?

Most posts tend to be well thought-out and well structured but this seems to be ‘I have something to promote so I will cobble something together in 5 minutes’.

Wouldn’t 6 reasons on ‘how you can become more appealing to your followers’ be more positive?

Sorry to be so downbeat but all feedback should be deemed useful :)

  • May 19, 2009

    Lol I agree with Sean.

I also wanted to add that another REAL way people get followers is through real life relationships. Going to TweetUps, putting your Twitter name on your biz cards and getting your friends to join Twitter are all great ways to get your follower count up with some real relationships.

Have to agree with @stuartflatt. There seem to be a growing number of guest posts of indifferent quality on Twitip recently. Personally I’d like to see more posts from Darren himself.

  • May 19, 2009

These are great tips and I will focus on tip #2 since I don’t have a celebrity status as of yet ;-)

  • May 19, 2009

I will not agree with this I have a reason not to follow every one that follows me,I just want his profile should ahve enough updates,I cna’t follow a guy with one update .

    @kgopal

I agree, this post sort of falls flat on advice :/. It’s ok to up the quality and lose out on the quantity rather than the other way around.

  • May 19, 2009

Well, I’m definitely a follow whore myself. The more people I follow the better chance I have of finding something interesting. That is my reasoning for it anyways.

  • May 19, 2009

So this article suggests that most followers have no real interest in what you have to share. Meaning twitter is mostly a popularity contest?

    I disagree.

  • May 19, 2009

Really good post, for real doze reason a value and in my case i would like to be fallow becasue i have something interesthing to say.
    Than you for the pots.

  • May 19, 2009

#8 Because you leave a comment here and people are wondering who you are ;-)

  • May 19, 2009

Hi, Gino said something about twitter being a popularity contest, and at times I really feel like it is! Some people are being followed simply to show off their numbers. And, I’ve watched some of these people who have thousands of followers, and they are the follow whores!

Either way, I’m taking it slow with twitter and focusing only on good content to follow. With sooo few hours in the day, I can’t keep up with everyone:)

  • May 19, 2009

    Hector, Twitter is simple.

Follow those who tweet about things that interest you. Tweet about things that you find interesting. Use your bio to describe yourself and your interests. The followers you get through this method are the ones that will be of greatest value to you.

  • May 19, 2009

    haha..nice post……

    GUILTY ;)

well, i have a blog , and i want my tweeters to see it, and tell what they think about what i write…

  • May 19, 2009

-gino you missed the whole point.. never said that..

  • May 19, 2009

I love twitter to people or should I say twitter watch, learn and observe! I follow people who I personally think are interesting, and who I can learn something from. If anybody happens to follow me then that is just a bonus. I do have a lot of cyber and real friends on twitter, and quality always counts over quantity.

So, this blog post was completely a non post with no value. Nothing wrong with Twitterfollower.com. You don’t have to put your name on the list and Twitterfollower doesn’t spam you, someone who follows you spams you. It’s up to you to vet your followers for spammers. If you want to follow everyone who follows you then why not, it’s free.

Tweet Later has an auto follow function, does that make it a twitter spammer. BTW, the only way you see spam is if you use the web interface. Use a 3rd party app like TweetDeck or Seesmic Desktop to filter who you actually see in your list. I have 800+ followers, but don’t follow all of them in Seesmic desktop. Do you think Darren watches all the updates of all the people he follows? Please get real.

  • May 20, 2009

I think I get more followers from the #FollowFriday tags. I get more followers between Thursday nights though Saturday mornings.

  • May 22, 2009

Every once in a while I’ll get a surprise like 300 people following me. I don’t know which technique works because I do a few of them. All FREE! Speaking of techniques those that use Twitter Traffic Machine irk me the most but also puzzle me. Either the vendors are making a lot of money or people are finding it on Clickbank and promoting it and the vendors are not making money but it’s hard to believe that the afilliate marketers are making anything because the twitter ads for this product have saturated the timeline.

I believe there’s a 7th reason you get new followers: They want to sell you something. and hope you’ll follow them in return. If you do you can be sure you’ll get lots of junk mail.

TWIMC, I get new follows after my every update, but I only follow those that mean something to me personally. :-)

  • June 1, 2009

Great and very true post. Thanks! I’m new on twitter and get same people following, but not interacting at all. Or some mad people just sending me spam. Crazy! :)

  • November 20, 2009

Fun read! And very true indeed, especially reason nr 1 I believe :-)

  • December 8, 2009

Fredrickus, you said that reason No.[1] Because they’re a follow whore!
I wonder who are the pimps ? Please enlighten me on this argument :-)

  • January 18, 2010

I must admit that when I first started out I tried using #6, only to discover that it just lead me to useless followers and other marketers.

No internet fame to speak of so I am trying to build up followers by initiating conversations :)

  • January 20, 2010

Its funny how the truth hurts sometimes…lol….but I have developed some online relationships with other colleagues and have joined some programs that I saw being tweeted. In the end Twitter is a great tool..you just have to know how to use it
Live long and prosper is not just for Vulcans.

  • February 11, 2010

When I first started using Twitter, I was mislead by others that #1 was just the way things worked on Twitter. Lame. I am now recovering from this misleading advice.

I now try and publish original thoughts to my blog and actually start conversations with people that I find interesting. Sometimes these people follow me, sometimes they don’t, but the conversations are usually still very interesting – and isn’t that what it’s all about anyway?

I think i was tagged in #FollowFridays train as a new follower followed me .I think i am famous than i thought
