Did You Tweet About Michael Jackson’s Death?

This past week or so has been pretty traumatic for some, what with the losses of Farrah Fawcett, Ed McMahon, Billy Mays, and of course, Michael Jackson.

Up until the #moonfruit promotion had started (Tweeters would use the hashtag for a chance to win a free Macbook Pro), Michael Jackson or some version thereof was the top trending topic on Twitter after his untimely death.

So I give you, dear readers, this poll:

Did You Tweet About Michael Jackson's Death?

The reason I ask is because I happened to notice that many people truly did not send out even one single tweet about Michael Jackson. Sure, there were plenty of people being what I consider to be rude or disrespectful with their tasteless jokes and such… but I am honestly curious as to the percentages of people who did and did not tweet about “MJ” (as that was also in the trending topics, aside from his full name) after his passing.

Even if you only tweeted ONCE about it, please check the “Yes” box. I realize some people (like myself) tweeted about it several times. Also, even if your tweet was what I referred to above as rude or disrespectful, again, please choose “Yes” as your answer.

Happy Independence Day, America!

I guess everyone who’s not living under the rock did. :)

I actually did a post about Michael Jackson, and collected a list of freebies to commemorate his loss : http://bit.ly/oUseN

Well, Mohsin – I was thinking more along the lines of what people actually use Twitter for, and who out there stuck to their guns, or who gave way a little in order to make mention of it. I do know plenty of people who are far from living under a rock, who did NOT tweet about him.

I haven’t been online much the last few week or so, but in any case it never occurred to me to tweet about MJ. I’ll answer your unasked question “why not?”: because I think there’s an element of jumping on the bandwagon with things like this. What could anything I or the hundreds of thousands of others who tweeted add to the total MJ media overload. What would be the point?

I was far more moved by the death of Farrah Fawcett. As a child I was very much in love with this blonde in Charlie’s Angels. She was darn sexy and a good actress.

I will have to admit I have none of Michael’s albums. I do listen to him on the radio – it’s not that I turn away from any of his music, but he hasn’t impressed me. His untimely death doesn’t change that. It would be hipocrisy to say differently, although I acknowledge many seem saddened by his passing.

But nice to get a poll to find out what people actually did. :-)

No…I didn’t even check my Twitter on that day.

  • July 5, 2009

I didn’t, because to me that’s more of a water cooler subject. I talked about it with a ton of people, but it’s not the kind of thing I blog or tweet about. I tend to stay away from celebrity news/gossip and current events when I’m blogging or tweeting.

Interesting. It seems to be a 50/50 split right now.

I was (again) amazed about the twitter-speed and how long it took TV stations to follow up.

  • July 5, 2009

Didn’t tweet about any of it, except for one tweet about so many in one week. You did leave off one name. Karl Malden died the other day.

  • July 5, 2009

I did tweet about it once or twice in @ response to other people who tweeted about it. Personally, I don’t see why tweeting about it or NOT should be a big deal.

  • July 5, 2009

Yes, I did but mainly to comment (or criticize) the tributes paid to him – ’til now we’re winning ;-)

The only Tweet from me was that I hadn’t realized that Michael Jackson – the Beer Hunter Guy – had died a couple of years ago. I always enjoyed his books and living in the US his death wasn’t reported.

Wacko Jacko, the singer who made a few decent songs nearly 30 years ago, didn’t hold any interest for me.

I have retweeted some good articles I found about MJ and his death.

  • July 5, 2009

I didn’t tweet about him at all and on the day he died ended up closing twitter for the rest of the day because it all started to get so old. I’ve never really understood the brouhaha around celebrity deaths.

  • July 5, 2009

No rocks here, but I still didn’t tweet about any of the celebrity deaths that have happened recnetly, including Michael Jackson’s. I enjoy reading celebrity gossip blogs, and I think maybe they just put me into information overload so I didn’t feel the need to say anything about it.

MJ’s death didn’t have a great effect on me, so that’s most likely part of the reason I kept quiet as well.

I found several very interesting articles about Michael Jackson, and I tweeted to pass their links along.

  • July 7, 2009

I tweeted about him, to mention a blog post I wrote about his death, as well as to the extent that his death did have an impact on me personally. Thing is, I tend to include personal bits here and there in my tweets because that’s my philosophy with social networking in general. i.e. the “social” part of social networking means letting people get to know you as a whole person. Business is certainly the main focus (for me at least), but you have to share yourself beyond that to build your brand, contradictory as that might sound.

    Cheers.
