I have 147 twitter followers as of now. I have tweeted just 3 times since June 2009. Yet, my followers have increased gradually without me following them. I am thinking to tweet regularly to witness the actual twitter response.

Have you thought of using Tweet Adder, Its really effective for automating tweets at a certain time, and it saves lots of time when it comes to following people, or unfollowing people.

Just recently I found an article that shows you how to get a discount on Tweet Adder.... I saved $37

What I like most about this thread is that on a Twitter Tips blog, a seemingly narrow view on Twitter growth, if you're to take a balanced view of the entire thread, (nothing personal @NicksTraffic) has generated a massive response and provided useful insights, tips and generated a well-rounded discussion.

The replies to the post have not only helped cement my view on what lies at the core of Social Media Culture but encouragingly so, the mostly constructive input has driven home the true beauty of what Social Engagement can achieve. What I mean by this is that @NicksTraffic's post comes across as somewhat naive & a vehicle to pursue his goal - a number. However, this forum enables people to have a voice, engage, give & receive feedback in the community and like myself, learn. Thank you for giving Nick, myself and I'm sure numerous others the 'full picture'- bloody awesome!

Also, Nick a few questions for you:

1. Any updates on progress? It'd be great if you did some follow up on your goal, I notice just now you are some 444 followers strong (as of this reply) and it is ~ 4.5months on - do you have any monthly/weekly stats, are you graphing growth/shrinkage? It would be awesome to see, especially if there is an inflection point after which critical mass sends you exponential for example. This I'm sure would generate ongoing interest.. perhaps a follow up thread? What I learnt/mistakes I made etc?

2. [Now I'm going to sound like I'm really slating you, which I really am not, but given my motivation to write this & what I have taken away from the entire thread, I am disappointed – having only checked your Twitter account when I was thinking of the suggestion in (1) above] - I notice you are still not too engaging on Twitter & seem to be broadcasting a tad (certainly way more than 3 tweets per day over the last 30-odd days). Here was me thinking we'd both learnt something here...

I think Twitter is one of those unusual places where talking to random strangers really is the norm!!

It is mad how it is so accepted world wide but that's the beauty. Ofcourse the real joy is being followed by lots of people and being able to send a Tweet knowing full well that it will be recieved by thousands and thousands of people! That is what I feel is the amazing beauty of Twitter!

Although having tons of followers is fab, don't get carried away with it. If you tweet normally and follow people who share your interests I feel you'll get far further in whatever mission you have that hoping that you'll get lots of random followings.
Don't get me wrong, having lots of people follow you is awesome! But you should try to make sure the majority of these are valuable followers who really will be interested in what you've got to say!

If you would like to Follow Me, I'll follow you back very fast!

I'm raising awareness for Madeleine McCann and have over 28,360 followers currently!

My Twitter is:

Hope to see you there! x

Gosh, people can be viscous when hiding behind a computer screen can’t they! Remember… being honest is always good, but you can take it too far and your responses do go to real people who have feelings! Being nasty just isn't nice IMHO!

As for staying in touch with large numbers of followers, I organise mine into lists. One is for inspiration, one is for business contacts, one is for family and one is for reading when I have spare time. I find this to be the most effective way of keeping in touch with everyone as it allows me to use my time more wisely.
