“How do I get more followers on Twitter?”
This is a question I get asked a lot – so I thought I’d put together a bit of a compilation of links to posts I’ve published that touch on the topic of getting followers.
- 5 Tips to Grow Your Twitter Presence – one of my earlier posts on the topic of finding followers and gaining influence on Twitter.
- How to Use Twitter – Tips for Bloggers – some of these are more on the topic of getting followers than others – but it contains some useful tips for beginners (particularly bloggers).
- What’s in it for Your Followers? How to be Useful on Twitter – central in most advice on building a twitter following is to create something useful for your followers.
- 7 Ways to Be Worth Following on Twitter – Be Interesting, Be Informative, Be Interactive…. (plus 4 more)
- 6 Tips for Using Your Twitter Profile to Get New Followers – some great tips for fining followers that all revolve around your profile page on Twitter.
- How to Grow Your Follower Numbers to Over 10,000 in a Week – not something that everyone could do but this story of how SitePoint quickly grew their follower numbers might be helpful for some.
- Follow Me and Win a Prize – the Merit of Twitter Competitions – looking at the pros and cons of using contests to find followers on Twitter.
I’m sure others have written some great tutorials and tips on getting followers on Twitter – feel free to suggest them in comments below.
Let me finish however with a quick piece of advice – raw follower numbers are not everything. I personally would prefer to have 100 followers who shared my interests and who were interested in interaction than having 1000 unfocused and uninteractive followers. Twitter isn’t just a numbers game – sure having lots of followers has its advantages but don’t let your goals all be purely about getting as many followers as possible.
@smashadv
Another way – own a great domain name and build the right content into it. For example, if you owned ‘www.attractmorefollowers.com’ or ‘gainmorefollowers.com’ and included the right kind of content, you’d be a player. Oh yeah, I own those domains. But I really don’t want to own them. Just sell them.
Thanks for this post.
@leahmcchesney
Great one spot shopping for the newbie…will bookmark this and pass it on for those who need it.
@Patternhead
I started using twitter a couple of weeks ago to spread the word about my new pattern design blog. It’s worked great so far.
Thanks for the useful tips!
@feint
here is another one: http://idezy.com/2009/01/20-easy-ways-to-get-twitter-followers/
@jrgriggs
So many work so hard to get a massive amount of followers. Then they get so overwhelmed that they never even tweet, they are too busy getting followers.
Like the followers I get that have 1 update, following 1257 people and are followed by like 400 people. And the 1 update is “going to the mall.” Then they wonder why they are not being followed back, lol.
@tweetertips
Great roundup, using many of these tips to start growing my followers for my new site and twitter ID. Do you have any advice as far as having multiple twitter accounts? Do you think its a good or bad idea?
@ecomind
Some great tips put together here. I experience myself growth as a result of following several of these advices.
I found it easier to adapt these advices now when I have got more experience using Twitter. Now I have a better understanding of how the various mechanisms around Twitter works.
Keep up with these articles..
Cheers..
@mr_gadget
Great article Darren.
Especially liked your point articulating that quality is better than quantity.
Regards,
Arnold
@jensenrf
I completely agree. It feels good to have a large number of followers but it doesn’t necessarily mean you are more valuable than the next. If you truly want to know if you have the right group of followers ask them a question and if you get a helpful response you are golden.
However if you are looking for raw numbers here are a couple of quick wins to start connecting with others outside of your normal network: 1) Participate in a hashtag and twitter q/a session such as #journchat and #DCTH. 2) Spend an extra hour tweeting/replying on Sunday to people in and out of your network.
Number two will get you a good share of spam accounts but we are speaking raw numbers here.
@agoutloud
I think your last paragraph is the lesson of the day.
@ShriNagesh
Love the last paragraph. Its definitely not number game but everybody seems to be in a rush to grow followers. Its acceptable if the network grows at a steady pace. But many twitterers try following 2k with 10 updates. smells spam
I’ve compiled a list of tools and apps to help find and manage followers
http://web2mom.com/30-ways-to-find-manage-followers-on-twitter/
Happy tweeting,
ShriNagesh
@michaelaulia
I never pay attention to Twitter so much so I thought that quantity is better than quality. I guess having 3000 followers don’t mean that those followers are actually following you!
@cbedon
I agreed, its not always about the number game, it should be more on connecting with people that share similiar interest, and can be able to shoot ideas back and forht if possible.
@dianafreedman
Thanks for putting together this list of articles. It’s definitely helpful. Quality is definitely better than quantity… the tweeple you have good relationships with are more likely to retweet for you anyway.
@geckotales
I agree with JR that you have to keep up with good updates and this can be hard when you have a blog, a website, and a job.
@thebenchs
Than you for the links
@devabby
Great Post and thank for sharing great tips
@All_Sports
Well my curiousity got the best of me and I did sign on for the latest and greatest re-tweet following scam. Is it a scam, I don’t know. It does look spammy though. I sent out one tweet about it and that was it and thats all. I became fearful of the rep I was presenting using it so no more. Besides the fact that I can honestly say I have not noticed a marked increase in followers. When in doubt remember “Content is King”
@Choonks
Thanks for the articles…wonderful tips. I’ve been muddling around trying to get my bearings on twitter. I was told it’s about building a massive following; the truth be told, like you mentioned, I’d rather have more interaction with my followers and those I follow. Great last paragraph.
@MikeRalph
I started with Twitter aiming to get as many followers as possible, however I soon realised that it is quailty that will deliver not quantity…..
@blogseocom
try these guys @TrueFollowers. follow this profile or follow their followers, who promise to follow back, always.
@authorlisalogan
The smartest thing I ever did was something I never meant to do…I accidentally followed 500 people. I’d gone to my own follower list to follow back those I wasn’t yet, only somehow I wound up on someone ELSE’S follower list instead. Pages of Click Click Click later I realized the error.
Lo and behold, I’ve met some of the greatest, most fascinating people and have learned so much! Sometimes numbers do help, as it’s tough to truly gauge someone’s overall views and interests from profiles and a few tweets. (Admittedly, I signed up to auto follow/unfollow after this little gaffe. LOL)
@anne0208
Following people in twitter is like htting two birds with one stone… By following them, they’ll follow you too. And also, you are getting to know them better. and have some potential friends to.. Follow me on twitter… anne0208

@mojopath
Lots of good strategies and tool ideas. I do a lot of this stuff and learned a couple good ones as well. Of course the free tools are great (tweetlater, twitterfeed, twollow, etc..)
Although I like working on Twitter, I love playing with my kids much more. I found the money I spent on this product to be worth it many times over. I highly recommend it (this is actually my site, I liked it so much I bought a wholesale quantity of the software).
http://www.getmoretwitterfriends.com
Aside from being able to follow based on advanced searches, the software keeps track of who you followed in a database so you never re-follow if your search picks someone up again.
Cheers.
Chris
Proud owner of 3 sticky kids
I found a good list of followback users at http://bit.ly/followfriends It gave me 25 within 24hrs and by the week I had over 200 without bothering anyone, lol
I started using twitter a little over a month ago, I have about 780 followers now. I used hummingbird a couple of times to help get me some new followers but if anyone is looking for a great automated twitter program, I would suggest getmoretwitters.com
@jayreason716
just started looking ot get my name out there
I’ve also tried to use software in order to get more followers, and for now I
like Extweet far more than any of the other I tried – Some of the tools didn’t even
had a trial version available for download.
If you want to get followers, you need add more follows , some of them will follow back to you.(more than 20%).
so if you want to get 100 followers, maybe you need add 500 follows.
I use this soft to help me to add follows, TFAdder

my favorite train is The Twitter Train: get more twitter followers, it’s also a twitter autoadder and is completely automated! They don’t spam you so it’s pretty awesome.
@crystalgillis
This is true with anything in life…strive to make other people laugh, or help them even in a small way
I personally think TwitterAutomate.com is the best. It has a completely automated friend follower based on keywords, unfollower, scheduled tweets, mass dms, etc

It is hard to get twitter followers. But you have to just start conversations and they will come! Good luck

@beastleyBLVD
If you want followers, me and my friends just set up something which benefits me, and benefits you.
1. Follow @beastleyBLVD
2. After following him, tweet him that you followed, then, beastleyBLVD will ask 20 of his friends ASAP to follow your account.
So far, I got 20 people to follow bBLVD, and I’ve satisfied them all and gave them their 20 followers, this is no joke, we have no time for fooling people, just be a little patient because this might be in demand soon, and get traffic, so as I’ve said, please tweet @beastleyBLVD and notify him that you’ve followed him.
3. The 20 that will follow you are REAL people, not bots. Beastley and 30 others including me live in one house, so we all hang out, and 20 of us has a Twitter, so he can easily ask us to follow your account.
Make sure to spread the word, this will come in handy for you. Thank you and have a Merry Christmas.

Follow people on twitter is important.
Follow and follow back is the way to make friends on Twitter, and even in real life. The one-way follow is for famous people, celebility, but not for average people, like you and me.
So, do not afraid follow people, when I see people have big followers, I normally will take a look at their site, because I want to know what make so many people follow him.
See, this is the power of more followers.

@XKikiCupcakeX
Another tip, become friendly with a popular tweeter. Talk to them through tweets and get them to @ mention you. Others will get curious and check you out. ;D
@ViraTweeterTV
I huge number of followers are great and there are lots of ways using your niche keywords to get more followers but if they are not very responsive to you or your tweets then their not as beneficial of course.
@beliebeinangels
I’m only on twitter because of Justin Bieber.

@TheCoolestKat
Great advice, i’m new-ish to twitter, signed up a while back and never really used it.. Getting in to it now though! Not sure that is such a good idea, however, with the amount of uni work I have to do at the minute!
@ramanisumit
This seems to be pretty logical and I believe this should work. But the next logical step for most of us (who crave for more followers) would be to monetize the popularity. It would be great if someone can throw some light on this as well!
@fuckyesmunchies
well i hope this works, im a new site and need followers fast.

@PrayMaddyMcCann
The best tip to get your Twitter presence known is to follow real people and real people that CARE!
Don’t just go following anyone and everyone! Not only is that likely to get you banned but you also will have more room to follow genuine people that will help your goal if you follow people who share your opinions instead!
If you’d like to follow me, please do!

Hey guys, I actually came up with a free e-book on how you can get tons of Twitter followers, do check it out if that’s something you’re really interested in. http://bit.ly/9I9SQW
@pubrooms
The whole trying to get more followers to the profile should be natural, I could not agree with the point you made about having either 100 or 1000 the latter being interested and the former not really engaging. It’s all about engagement and providing update that are useful to the followers. Really useful and intelligent article, thanks
Peter
@LondonPRagency
Some great tips. As has been said it’s important to engage with people and more than anything be timely.
Often we will leave twitter on all day, checking regularly, to ensure that we are able to respond to tweets as soon as possible.
@atweeterstar
Great post with an amazing list of comments. Definitely a one stop shop for anybody new to Twitter.
@HilarryiousDee
Yeah, It sucks when you lose followers. I always get a gut feeling when that happens.
@mycellz4less
Adding other twitter users and tweeting great content is key!
@wwaardenburg
The ‘follow me and win a price’ can be helpfull, but most of the time these actions result in a lot of temporarily followers.
@Erynspeaks
I have found that posting interesting stuff (duh) is one key concept. Also though if you make relations to your followers the news spreads about you being,”personable.” However, Who am I to know anything about how to accumulate more followers. I am just a college student and a struggling artist.
@Nikkimaymay
If you tweet 3-4 tweets about loving socks, you’ll get an auto- follower.
If you tweet 3-4 tweets about Chuck Norris jokes, you’ll get a Chuck auto-follower. aha.
@starlandvn
I think following & follow back is a good way to to make more friends or followers. The more you tweet the more people know you!
@saulkevin
Fore more followers on twitter you need get attention of people or you will rejected from many people…
Having good apresentation(bio, page) is the most important
@modernmoney4u
Very helpful advise. I used it since several days and traffic to my blog really increased through the help of more followers on Twitter!
@tomdurkinblog
Thanks for sharing these with us Darren, I have also written my own post on the topic, as I’m sure many of us here have.
Here is the link:
http://tomdurkin.me/increase-twitter-followers/
thanks
@websiterockstar
I would have to disagree with people who say that sheer numbers don’t matter. The more followers you have, the greater the chance of getting traffic and meaningful connections. I believe that you have to wade through the 80% to get to the 20%.
I recently started really pushing Twitter for my other blog, @tradingheroes. I started with about 250 followers which I accumulated over a period of about 2 years.
Then I got aggressive about following people in the trading niche and it has been helping a lot. Twitter now accounts for 30% of my traffic to that blog and the bounce rates are below my averages for the site.
I now have about 750 followers and growing. I am still a little surprised how effective a medium it is.
