How to Get More Followers on Twitter

“How do I get more followers on Twitter?”

This is a question I get asked a lot – so I thought I’d put together a bit of a compilation of links to posts I’ve published that touch on the topic of getting followers.

I’m sure others have written some great tutorials and tips on getting followers on Twitter – feel free to suggest them in comments below.

Let me finish however with a quick piece of advice – raw follower numbers are not everything. I personally would prefer to have 100 followers who shared my interests and who were interested in interaction than having 1000 unfocused and uninteractive followers. Twitter isn’t just a numbers game – sure having lots of followers has its advantages but don’t let your goals all be purely about getting as many followers as possible.

Another way – own a great domain name and build the right content into it. For example, if you owned ‘www.attractmorefollowers.com’ or ‘gainmorefollowers.com’ and included the right kind of content, you’d be a player. Oh yeah, I own those domains. But I really don’t want to own them. Just sell them. ;) Thanks for this post.

I started using twitter a couple of weeks ago to spread the word about my new pattern design blog. It’s worked great so far.

    Thanks for the useful tips!

  • February 3, 2009

So many work so hard to get a massive amount of followers. Then they get so overwhelmed that they never even tweet, they are too busy getting followers.

Like the followers I get that have 1 update, following 1257 people and are followed by like 400 people. And the 1 update is “going to the mall.” Then they wonder why they are not being followed back, lol.

Great roundup, using many of these tips to start growing my followers for my new site and twitter ID. Do you have any advice as far as having multiple twitter accounts? Do you think its a good or bad idea?

  • February 3, 2009

Some great tips put together here. I experience myself growth as a result of following several of these advices.

I found it easier to adapt these advices now when I have got more experience using Twitter. Now I have a better understanding of how the various mechanisms around Twitter works.

    Keep up with these articles..

    Cheers..

    Great article Darren.

Especially liked your point articulating that quality is better than quantity.

    Regards,
    Arnold

  • February 3, 2009

I completely agree. It feels good to have a large number of followers but it doesn’t necessarily mean you are more valuable than the next. If you truly want to know if you have the right group of followers ask them a question and if you get a helpful response you are golden.

However if you are looking for raw numbers here are a couple of quick wins to start connecting with others outside of your normal network: 1) Participate in a hashtag and twitter q/a session such as #journchat and #DCTH. 2) Spend an extra hour tweeting/replying on Sunday to people in and out of your network.

Number two will get you a good share of spam accounts but we are speaking raw numbers here.

  • February 3, 2009

I think your last paragraph is the lesson of the day.

  • February 3, 2009

Love the last paragraph. Its definitely not number game but everybody seems to be in a rush to grow followers. Its acceptable if the network grows at a steady pace. But many twitterers try following 2k with 10 updates. smells spam

I’ve compiled a list of tools and apps to help find and manage followers

    Happy tweeting,

  • February 3, 2009

I never pay attention to Twitter so much so I thought that quantity is better than quality. I guess having 3000 followers don’t mean that those followers are actually following you!

  • February 4, 2009

I agreed, its not always about the number game, it should be more on connecting with people that share similiar interest, and can be able to shoot ideas back and forht if possible.

  • February 5, 2009

Thanks for putting together this list of articles. It’s definitely helpful. Quality is definitely better than quantity… the tweeple you have good relationships with are more likely to retweet for you anyway. :-)

  • February 5, 2009

I agree with JR that you have to keep up with good updates and this can be hard when you have a blog, a website, and a job.

  • February 7, 2009

    Than you for the links

  • February 9, 2009

Great Post and thank for sharing great tips

  • February 14, 2009

Well my curiousity got the best of me and I did sign on for the latest and greatest re-tweet following scam. Is it a scam, I don’t know. It does look spammy though. I sent out one tweet about it and that was it and thats all. I became fearful of the rep I was presenting using it so no more. Besides the fact that I can honestly say I have not noticed a marked increase in followers. When in doubt remember “Content is King”

  • February 20, 2009

Thanks for the articles…wonderful tips. I’ve been muddling around trying to get my bearings on twitter. I was told it’s about building a massive following; the truth be told, like you mentioned, I’d rather have more interaction with my followers and those I follow. Great last paragraph.

  • February 21, 2009

I started with Twitter aiming to get as many followers as possible, however I soon realised that it is quailty that will deliver not quantity…..

  • February 26, 2009

try these guys @TrueFollowers. follow this profile or follow their followers, who promise to follow back, always.

  • March 18, 2009

The smartest thing I ever did was something I never meant to do…I accidentally followed 500 people. I’d gone to my own follower list to follow back those I wasn’t yet, only somehow I wound up on someone ELSE’S follower list instead. Pages of Click Click Click later I realized the error.

Lo and behold, I’ve met some of the greatest, most fascinating people and have learned so much! Sometimes numbers do help, as it’s tough to truly gauge someone’s overall views and interests from profiles and a few tweets. (Admittedly, I signed up to auto follow/unfollow after this little gaffe. LOL)

Lots of good strategies and tool ideas. I do a lot of this stuff and learned a couple good ones as well. Of course the free tools are great (tweetlater, twitterfeed, twollow, etc..)

Although I like working on Twitter, I love playing with my kids much more. I found the money I spent on this product to be worth it many times over. I highly recommend it (this is actually my site, I liked it so much I bought a wholesale quantity of the software).

    http://www.getmoretwitterfriends.com

Aside from being able to follow based on advanced searches, the software keeps track of who you followed in a database so you never re-follow if your search picks someone up again.

    Cheers.

If you want to get followers, you need add more follows , some of them will follow back to you.(more than 20%).
so if you want to get 100 followers, maybe you need add 500 follows.

If you want followers, me and my friends just set up something which benefits me, and benefits you.

    1. Follow @beastleyBLVD

    2. After following him, tweet him that you followed, then, beastleyBLVD will ask 20 of his friends ASAP to follow your account.

So far, I got 20 people to follow bBLVD, and I’ve satisfied them all and gave them their 20 followers, this is no joke, we have no time for fooling people, just be a little patient because this might be in demand soon, and get traffic, so as I’ve said, please tweet @beastleyBLVD and notify him that you’ve followed him.

    3. The 20 that will follow you are REAL people, not bots. Beastley and 30 others including me live in one house, so we all hang out, and 20 of us has a Twitter, so he can easily ask us to follow your account.

Make sure to spread the word, this will come in handy for you. Thank you and have a Merry Christmas.

Follow people on twitter is important.

Follow and follow back is the way to make friends on Twitter, and even in real life. The one-way follow is for famous people, celebility, but not for average people, like you and me.

So, do not afraid follow people, when I see people have big followers, I normally will take a look at their site, because I want to know what make so many people follow him.

See, this is the power of more followers.

Another tip, become friendly with a popular tweeter. Talk to them through tweets and get them to @ mention you. Others will get curious and check you out. ;D

  • February 9, 2010

I huge number of followers are great and there are lots of ways using your niche keywords to get more followers but if they are not very responsive to you or your tweets then their not as beneficial of course.
