Really nice post. With my clients, working with Twitter requires a great deal of front lines leadership. Your summary hits many of the important principles..I would add taking an approach of collaboration with the client with less emphasis on consultation. Twitter is like electricity....how to
ground it, and create value is project by project.

Meredith, I agree completely that client education and strategy for Twitter is very much important; especially when there's a big learning curve for the client. That's why I always advocate developing a strong on-going relationship with clients to help them through this process. It takes time, planning, lots of hand-holding and hard work to help a client understand the value of Twitter to their organization. I think applications such as TweetDeck are just tools that should be used along the way for better... or worse (if, like you say, it's introduced *too* early in the process).

Making the tools function is relatively easy, it's the strategy that seems to stump everyone. Wish I got paid for every time I heard a client (or potential client) say, "We have to be on Twitter" without having the faintest idea why. Our job, as I see it, is to develop and explain strategy long before we introduce applications like Tweetdeck.

Reply works better than DM since most app updates DM slower and so many spam these days. I find just reply or DM to get IM, then chatting back and forth is the greatest.

Yes, Steve, Direct Message could have been good but now there are so many Spam messages that go in there that it really doesn't make them all that useful any more, I find myself occasionally scrolling through there to ensure I don't miss one, and very often I still do.

I could see direct messages being useful but actual tweets could be an issue if messages are missed. eMail works out well just like direct messages would.

Great article and great advice. As social media evolves it's nice to have insight into better ways to utilize it. This site really shines in doing so.

Twitter is just another communication tool. Keeping clients in the loop is key, be it by phone, email, Twitter or smoke signals. :-)
