My 6 Step Plan To Give Thanks To My Followers

We all know that “Follow Friday” is a great way to show your appreciation to new followers and followers you like.

I have a few ways I use to thank my followers that go beyond just a #FF shout.

Having 500 followers or 46,000 like I do, it means nothing if you don’t learn to be grateful or show your followers some appreciation in some way.

Here’s what I do…

1. I say “Thank You” to every person that RTs any of my tweets.

2. I #ff shout every person that RTs any of my tweets.

3. I do a #ff for every new follower for the week.

4. I make a list of all the people that RT my tweets, I call it “My Top RTs” this way it is easier for me to track and return the favor and RT some of their tweets.

5. I follow back every person that RTs my tweets.

6. Answer any DM I get (and yes, you will get some “Real” DMs in all the spam, just do a daily scan and answer the real ones).

These are all small things you can incorporate today into your Twitter “To Do”, and you will see how much people appreciate a simple TY or #FF mention or even answering a DM to show you are real.

It doesn’t matter if you use one or all my tips, in the end there is no downside to showing your followers you see them and appreciate their support.

What do you do?

I try to thank those that RT me, I don’t really participate in #FF because it has gotten out of hand, I would prefer to see people put just a couple of people in the #FF and say why you should follow them.

I have seen people that get pissed about not thanking for a RT, I don’t RT someone to get a thankyou, I do it because I think my followers might find the info helpful.

Oh yeah, get some threaded comments on this blog! How are we supposed to act like a community if we can’t reply to each other LOL

  • March 31, 2010

I usually thank my follower via DM cuz I don’t wanna have my profile page full of @… thank yous, but I think I’m gonna use your great tips starting this Friday just to see how it’ll go.

    Thanks for sharing.

Hey Keith Thanks for the comment.

I Thank people for the RT because it’s a nice thing to do, they don’t have to RT but they do so a getting a TY is least I can do.

FF still works and works great for me, like I said I use it a lil different, just another way to show my appreciation for peoples support.

Trust me a simple TY for an RT or a simple FF, you would amazed at how much people appreciate that.

I agree,, THREADED comments would be great..lol

How do you keep track of all the RT’s, new followers, etc. to #FF them at the end of the week?

  • March 31, 2010

I try to thank anyone that RTs. But I found out that in Hoot Suite, it doesn’t show them all. So I’ve been missing lots of thank yous that I should have sent :( I always answer DM’s! I think it just comes down to common courtesy and good manners.

  • March 31, 2010

Angela, TY for the comment. I agree that it is common courtesy and good manners and it’s such a simple thing.

I use hootesuite to, but I go right to twitter to have conversations. or tweetdeck.. makes easier to have conversations.

  • March 31, 2010

I think it’s great to say thank you to all the people who RTs any of my tweets. But, on the other hand, when 30-40 people are doing it, I’m not sure if I should do it.

Won’t sending 40 Thank You’s make my Twitter timeline full of clutter? Or doesn’t it matter?

  • March 31, 2010

    Jens TY for the comment.

You can wait till a few RT it then send a TY to 5-8 people at once.

If you do that thru out the day you will not fill the timeline and annoy anyone.

  • March 31, 2010

Hey Tyler.. Thanks for the comment.

I #FF mainly the one’s that @reply me, as far as the people that RT my posts, and have a convo with, I just look thru all my @replies for the week and click them then copy paste them to an email so I can break ti all up into 140 char.

Also all your most recent followers come in in order so you see the last person you got then see all the new one’s.

  • March 31, 2010

Thanking every RT is good , but what if you have lot of rts and you than every one of them ? Your tweets will looks like a collection of Thanks and #FF tweets

  • March 31, 2010

    Krish..TY for the comment.

If you get that many RTs then that’s a great problem to have..haha

But like I said earlier.. you can wait to get 5-8 and send 1 TY tweat..if you do this thruout the day you will not be annoying anyone with to mant TY tweats.

    John Paul,

I thank each person who RT’s my tweets. I also check DM’s; it only takes a minute to scan through for the real people. I follow every person back. I appreciate their interest in me and nothing says thank you like a follow.

If you have 50,000 followers it might take some time to go through each RT. If you’re under 50K you have more than enough time to do it. Minutes spent expressing gratitude are your most prosperous minutes of the day. You’re laying the groundwork for a relationship. As a matter of fact there’s no quicker way to add REAL followers fast than by saying Thank You. Gratitude has a strange and powerful effect on people. When people are appreciated they (and other people) tend to appreciate you.

Ryan, I couldn’t have said it any better man.. :)

Bottom line, no one should be above saying a simple Thank You.

  • April 1, 2010

you’re right, choose a real DM is very interesting. Real DM usually want to mention your name.

  • April 1, 2010

Roso I agree.. Thanks for the comment.

  • April 1, 2010

Thanks for sharing. I am still a bit of a newbie on Twitter but I do make a point thank new followers via DM. I also send out individual Thank You’s to those who RT.

  • April 2, 2010

    Cynthia thanks for the comment.

Your a newbie but your doing the things that many “experts” don’t even take the time to do.. That’s great.

  • April 2, 2010

Each Friday morning I do a separate #FF for those that mentioned me during that week.

  • April 3, 2010

That’s good Mickie.. easier to just do #FF all at once. But whatever works, long as you do them is whats important.

  • April 4, 2010

FANTASTIC plan! I do a couple of these, but I’m going to institute a couple more. Great advice!

  • April 7, 2010

Courtney thanks for the comment and comp :) If your doing some allready then I’m sure your doing great, but yea adding the rest will def start to pay off for your.

  • April 8, 2010

I engage with my followers. This means that if they say something, especially if they pose a question, I reply to them.

  • April 9, 2010

Excellent idea about having the list for those that RT. Brilliant thanks.
