Opt Out of Auto-DMs Using Social Oomph

A recent poll here on Twitip asked:

“What do you think when you get an automated ‘Thanks for following’ DM?”

The results ranged from “I love them”, “I hate them” and “I don’t mind them” to “I unfollow the person who sent it”.

So, for those of you who hate them and unfollow tweeps who send them, Social Oomph has a super quick and easy way to opt out of auto-DMs.

1. Head over to www.socialoomph.com

2. On the left side, click on “DM Opt Out

3. Log in to your Twitter account

4. Follow @OptMeOut

5. Wait for @OptMeOut to follow you back. They’ll send you a DM telling you they have.

6. Send a DM to @OptMeOut – it doesn’t matter what the DM says.

7. After sending the DM, unfollow @OptMeOut. This way, you’re not on @OptMeOut’s follower list and your choice to opt out of auto-DMs remains private. @OptMeOut will unfollow you too.

Within minutes of receiving your DM, Social Oomph stops further automated welcome DMs and you can enjoy an email and DM inbox free of auto-DMs.

Oh, and you don’t need a Social Oomph account to opt out of auto-DMs – anybody on Twitter can opt out with this awesome Social Oomph service.

I love this idea BUT think about it from this angle:

I have to get an auto-dm from @OptMeOut in order to set up service. It’s the same with several other services I’ve set up, so the only problem I see by eliminating all auto-DMs is that other future services (like productivity tools, follower management, etc) that I have to set up via auto DM are limited.

Other than that, it’s a pretty frickin cool tool that allows me to remain connected with someone but filter their spam away without a worry!

It’s great that the company responsible for the vast majority of automated DM’s also offers a way to get rid of them. Solving a problem you created doesn’t make you a hero :)

Also, doesn’t this only opt you out of automated DM’s sent by their system?

In fact, I was wondering how this could possibly work.

I saw this last week and I think its a really neat tool!
Social Oomph seems to be getting better and better :)

I don’t mind the auto follow messages… It gives me instant insight to see if the person is a spammer trying to promote the next best make money on Twitter thing (I can then unfollow them instantly)… or if it’s a genuine person with a blog, or website or who shares valuable tools, information, entertainment or whatever else floats my boat…
