Though very good information here; and much of it common sense; don't send me porn, limited time..better hurry, etc. I'd be careful at lumping those toxic activities along with pre-scheduled tweets. Many of us have online businesses that deal worldwide, and have to use scheduled tweets, especially when asleep (so they will see us in India, France etc. And even during the day, I have plenty of friends with whom I talk, why NOT run benign ads in the background (if they work and they do).....why in the world should anyone care if they make someone who is not going to buy anything unfollow them. I'm on Twitter for business. I am in my hometown for friends, and stay in touch with old high school and college friends for "social networking". Twitter is a wonderful place to sell ones products or services; and it is also a great place not too; that is, like you, to make friends and socialize. In otherwise it is very much NOT a one-size-fits-all social networking and I have seen more and more write articles on how to tweet or not to tweet and look a few years later and they've discovered they had it all wrong; they are doing the very things they "heard from gurus a few years ago" only to find it didn't work for them. Good luck and caveat emptor!! Rick London

It surprises me that swearing or being crude isn't mentioned as a quick way to get blocked. I love words, and I don't have a hate on for people who swear occasionally, but I really think that someone should have the courtesy of knowing me before being casually profane. It may not mean anything to you, but public swearing is like ear pollution.

Can we add to the list "Kill Follow Friday"? Or at least change it to #SingleFollowFriday (Learn what this is: http://nickstraffictricks.com/1111_lets-change-followfriday-to-singlefollowfriday/ )

#1 is one of my non-favorite favorites (if that makes sense). I had a guy send me info on acquiring "a massive # of twitter followers". The problem (aside from the fact that I don't want just massive number of followers), is that it simply wasn't working for him (he had less than 100 followers). Even worse, he was touting himself as a Social Media Expert.

Love it! Although I have to confess that the other day I DID tweet "taking a computer break, going to take a walk on this beautiful day!"
Nothing turns me off faster than seeing "I got more followers at.." (esp. if I just started following them!)
I know that the app sends it (usually unbeknowned to the user), but it still makes me feel like they tricked me somehow - like they might as well be saying "gotcha!"
this is second only to:
DM'ing me "thanks for following, now go to my website" which truly is among the most insulting things on twitter (IMHO!)

If only people would think about "what would this look like in real life?"

Great POST! I will be sharing it with my "students!"
Oh, and remember that it's called SOCIAL networking not ROBO-networking! LOL

Porn is my biggest hate for on twitter....just lame, gets BLOCKED right from the start. I won't even go to their profile if I know or even think it seems to be porn. If I do make it to the profile, have a link to a blog or a personal website AND include the bio...always intereting to know something about the person. AND what is this with having just 1 or 2 tweets with over a hundred followers...
THIS was a great artical, one I have bookmarked to return to at later date.

I really like 'Twitter pariah' as a description. I'm sorry I missed your post when I did my tongue- in-cheek 25 unfollow behaviours, (http://bit.ly/cTX71) I'd have liked to include the 'check out my site' crazies. Thanks for the post.

Absolutely right David, although I suspect that this advice will fall on many deaf ears given that the perpetrators will have already set up their automated spam feeds and won’t be reading!

#5 is a good one for human Tweeters though. :)
