We all hear so much about how to get more followers on Twitter and how to use it to make money. Those things are well and good, but Twitter is a two way conversation. It is just as much about following as it is about getting followers.

Choose Who You Follow For the Right Reasons

Being a good follower starts with why you choose to follow someone on Twitter. I recently watched a video that presented a strategy of following random people to see who would follow you back. The sole purpose of this strategy was to get more followers.

Tweeting Your Best Self

Twitter has no doubt altered the entire landscape of blogging. It’s accessibility, immediacy, and wide availability to anyone with a working Internet connection have made it the fastest thriving online application ever, currently growing at twice the speed of Facebook.

I myself was late to the Twitter party. Though I did have an account, I rarely used it until recently, vastly preferring the broader canvas my own blog provided. It wasn’t until I finally realized the true benefit of what Twitter offered that I fully embraced its almost limitless possibility.

What does Twitter offer above all else? Twitter allows you to show a more immediate version of yourself.

When I am drafting a post to be later published on my own site, I can take all the time I need to sand the rough edges and make my prose and personality glow. This is not true with Twitter. Whenever I am truly engaged in Twitter, I am responding to information at the speed in which it appears. I have 140 characters to make my thoughts count, and a never ending stream of information to first access and then act upon.

How To Use Twitter To Tweak Your Relationships At Home

Have you ever wondered if Twitter could improve things at home? In this post, Corey Allan (follow him at @simplemarriage) of The Simple Marriage Project and Parent To Launch explores the idea of using Twitter to get more out of family relationships.

With the addition of social networks in the past few years, it’s amazing how easy it has become to stay “connected” to other people. I’m currently only on Facebook, FriendFeed and Twitter. But with countless other avenues to use for connection, how could these mediums be used to improve, or perhaps even save your relationship with your significant other?

I realize that many people use Twitter for the networking or marketing aspect of its design. It’s a great way to generate a buzz about a product or service you can provide. It’s also a way to expand your network of influence and influencers.

But what if Tweets were used to tweak your relationships?

8 Ways that Twitter Can Grow Your Freelance Business

Are you a Freelancer? Today Jenny Cromie, editor of The Golden Pencil, (follow her at @JennyCromie) talks about how Twitter can help grow a Freelance Business.

When I first read about Twitter in a Wired magazine article a little more than a year ago, I thought: What a waste of cyberspace! Why on earth would anyone waste their time trading banal “news” items like: Wearing pink slippers and eating a PBJ. Or, Cleaned toilet. Now for the sink.

Even productivity guru Tim Ferriss called Twitter “pointless e-mail on steroids.” At the time, I couldn’t have agreed more.

But what a difference a year makes! Like me, Tim Ferriss has now joined Twitterville. Of course, he follows no one and has about 10,720 followers. But that’s beside the point.

What I’m trying to say is that if you’re not orbiting in the Twitterverse, you might as well be living on Mars.

Everyone is all atwitter about Twitter now. It’s the THING. It’s the new pet rock of the worldwide cyber village. But I also don’t think it’s a fad. Twitter and other social networking tools are changing the way companies and individuals do business, get information, and communicate.

And the Twitterverse is getting more crowded by the day because late-adopter dolts like me finally get it. We’re all doing the “I-coulda-had-a-V8” head thump: Duh! Twitter is great for growing your business.

If you own a business of any size and you’re still not Twittering, you’re missing out on what amounts to a worldwide virtual chamber of commerce networking event that’s at your fingertips 24/7. Only on Twitter, you don’t press flesh or swap business cards—you exchange links to your Web site, blog, e-books, and online résumé. And you build relationships 140 characters at a time.

Still not convinced that Twitter can help your freelance business? Maybe my list will change your mind. As a business tool, Twitter can help you:

“Strange, isn’t it? Each man’s life touches so many other lives. When he isn’t around he leaves an awful hole, doesn’t he?” This is Clarence the angel in It’s a Wonderful Life referring to the impact George Bailey had on the others around him.

The holidays are approaching and, for me, it is a sentimental time. As I reflect on this past year I think about my family, friends, coworkers and a newer addition to my life, my social media pals.

I began to reflect…

Even if I don’t see my family, friends, co-workers on a daily basis, I’m connected to them in a way that makes it easy to reach them. Our relationships are connected in a way which ensures we wouldn’t lose one another, even if my outlook contacts list crashed tomorrow.

Which leads me to the point of this post:

If you’re reading TwiTip, you are most likely building many relationships and connections via Twitter.

  • What if Twitter went away tomorrow or the next day?
  • How many of those relationships are sustainable or viable?
  • If Twitter went away tomorrow, how many of your connections are “cross-medium?”

My gift to you—a few, simple tips here to ensure you never leave a hole in your network:
