Topify – An Essential Twitter Timesaver

The growing popularity of Twitter and the extensive use of it becomes very time consuming. Topify, a simple but powerful tool, saves a lot of time and energy when replying to direct messages and responding to new followers. Topify also has an added value in detecting spam followers. Let’s look into it.

Topify was created a few months ago by Arik Fraimovich Ouriel Ohayon, two Israeli web entrepreneurs. The basic idea of their service is to simplify email notifications on Twitter. I’ve been using Topify lately, and found it’s a superb time saver.

Replying to direct messages by email

With Topify, you get an email message from the service, and by the simple act of replying, you answer directly to your sender. Very simple, yet very powerful. This enhancement is excellent since it is very intuitive: we are used to receive direct messages via email, and to reply to them by hitting the reply button.

The default Twitter approach mechanism requires us to log into Twitter, click on Direct Messages, and click the reply button before replying – quite a lengthy process. Topify’s approach is very straightforward and saves a lot of time.

Follow new followers by replying

The influx of new followers requires our response. Some of which we wish to follow, and some – to ignore. The magical and trivial Reply button in our email provider is again put to good use here.

When a new Twitter user follows us, we get an email notification. Default Twitter usage requires us to log on, click on Followers and search for the user that followed us before hitting the “Follow” button.

Topify simplifies the process also here, by using the Reply button. Hitting send makes us follow back our new follower. We don’t need to type any additional text. As simple as that!

Another advantage of this notification is the richer data: in the mail we receive the number of users that is user is following, number of followers, the ratio and the number of updates are specified.

This helps us quickly identify if this is a fake / spam follower, or rather a real one. Very helpful and time-saving.

The information that comes with the follow notification also includes additional meta data such as the user’s bio, web site and his last 5 updates. This saves going to Twitter.

You are also notified If you are already following your new follower, enabling you to send a direct message by replying to this email.

Blocking and Unfollowing

Topify have recently added the ability to block a follower or unfollow him. This time it involves the forward button. You simply forward the follow mail / direct message mail to / accordingly. A confirmation message will be sent on completion.

Although these cases are less common, Topify is useful also here. Topify’s blog suggests that a spam utility will soon be developed.

I personally favor tweets that are in reply to my tweets. I would like to get those replies directly to mailbox, and be able to reply to them directly by an email reply. In busy times, I could close the Twitter website \ TwitterFox and just “listen” to my mailbox, and be alerted only for replies that are more important to me.

Do you have enhancements for Topify to share?

How do I join?

Topify is currently in a beta phase, but there are many invites out for grabs. Click here to get an invite.

The registration process is simple. You’re required to provide your Twitter credentials and your email address. Once confirmed, you get a unique email address at Topify. Then, you’re required to set this email address in your Twitter account instead of your current address. This is how Topify redirects your email notifications.

All in all, I find Topify to be a simple, yet excellent time saver tool for Twitter. I hope they enhance their service soon, and also make it available to everybody. Enjoy!

It is amazing how the truly great and useful things are often so simple that most people over look them. I love the way that you can reply via email!

Yea, this seems like a more efficient way to respond to DM’s

Wow Topify sound like the tool i’ve been looking for I hope to try it out. Being able to email into my twitter replies sounds really cool.

Cool. There is also a twitter API that allows you to send updates right from your Gmail inbox. Might be very useful for those who spend most of their time in their inbox reading and answering mails.

I’m happy to see those positive comments!

When I get the email that someone is following me, I just click the link to view the profile and follow directly from that page. Call me crazy, but I like to check out the profile of the twitterer. Topify would add an extra step.

Sounds like a fantastic service and was about to sign-up, however, I don’t want to be changing my registered email to one controlled by a third party. If you have login credentials then you have access to follower lists, replies and DM’s via the API – why is the email needed as well?

Thanks so much for sharing this time saving tip! I am always looking for ways to streamline due to the time investment social media can be. Very often I find myself on this site and I’m always grateful for the knowledge you share on here!

Seriously! This is EXACTLY what I needed!

My only hope is that they’ll add small avatars to the e-mail so you can SEE who the person is before following them too.

@ourielohayon I knew about Topify several weeks ago but I haven’t make a review in my Twitter blog because I don’t trust so much in any Twitter application without Oauth. Please let me know when Oauth is implemented in order to post about Topify in my Spanish Twitter’s blog.

I can’t believe I hadn’t heard of this before, this is a great tool, and so far it’s been very helpful.

  • April 9, 2009

I always thought that the email messages I sent would be sent to the sender. Oh my!

  • April 13, 2009

Thank you very much for the tip. Trying the app out.

@ourielohayon, keep up the great work and I am expecting the OAuth integration, are you planning on supporting OpenID?

    Best regards.
