Ah, the irony..........

Had to :giggle: when this came across my inbox just now.. Had LONG forgotten about the post.. Twitter has just a tad more ways to go if it's still saying "physically challenged".. It's person with a physical disability.. We see the PERSON, not the disability..

Thanks so much in advance..

Warmest wishes from Talking Rock.. :)

Thank you for the mention. Note that TwInBox (and especially Qwitter, not mentioned) are best suited for screen reader users. I'm universally accessible (i.e. low vision, mobility impairments, non-JavaScript, etc.) as well as great for screen readers.

Great article, but the title is a misnomer. Twitter.com is not accessible, therefore Twitter itself is *not* "Remaking the Persona of the Physically Challenged". It's the third-party applications that are making it happen.

Services like twitter can really help those who cannot physically get out into the world connect with other people, I think. It's important that we try and make them as accessible as possible.

My daughter has a chromosome disorder (18p-). This manifests mainly in that she is about 80% unintelligible with her verbal communication. She's 7 years old and cognitively at grade level with her peers. Has all the vocabulary in her beautiful little head, but, struggles to get it out. I just came from The Chromosome 18 Registry & Research Society's Annual Conference & shared my thoughts on Twitter & other social networking/media. This has opened an amazing door for those amongst us who don't communicate verbally. Individuals like my daughter can now participate in a (real time) back & forth conversation in a way that has not been available previously. My daughter emails, uses instant chat on Skype, blogs and makes entries on our FB Biz Page. I have reserved her name on Twitter for when she's old enough!! I am grateful for these tools as they allow my daughter to communicate in a "way" that others are communicating and has further opened the door for her to pursue entrepreneurship!

Thanks for this post. I will be sharing it with other Chromosome 18 Moms & Dads.

Thank you for this post. As a participant in various social media and an autism/disAbility advocate, I will be sharing this post with many in my local community. I appreciate the information, your awarenes and interest. It's nice to be included when we live in a world, too often demonstrative of disAbility exclusion.

A note to people interested in disability topics - issues relating to accessibility are usually discussed with the hashtag #a11y. That's Accessibility - a + 11 letters + y, hence a11y. Not so easy to remember, so it's ironically inaccessible in many cases.

As somebody who's bedridden, I use a heap of different internet tools and technologies and Twitter's certainly one I value.

As a person with a visual disability, there's no doubt that the Internet overall has helped many of us in work and play. It's interesting, because I haven't found Twitter to connect me to the world any more than it might help a fully-sighted person, but this article was eye-opening in terms of pointing out how it can help individuals with mobility issues. The implications of use for promotion of advocacy and awareness are also extremely powerful.

Thanks to the author and Darren for publishing this article, which is sure to broaden everyone's thinking overall! I know I'll be following many of the people cited in this piece.
