We’re Moving Servers

TwiTip has grown so fast in the last 16 days since launch that we’ve already outgrown our server and were starting to get a few ‘over capacity’ errors.

As a result today we’re moving servers to a much more powerful and reliable service (here’s hoping anyway). We’re starting the move any minute now – so there could be a few glitches and errors for the next little while. Hopefully we don’t lose anyone’s comments or have too much disruption. Thanks for your patience

Update – I think we’ve moved everything without too many problems.

One NEW FEATURE you’ll notice here on TwiTip is the ability to leave your Twitter ID when you leave a comment – it’s now part of the comment form.

What server are you going to?

  • November 19, 2008

    It’s a server at Linode

  • November 19, 2008

Which size are you going to get and why? I’ve been using Bluehost and have had quite a few problems with CPU errors. Interested in switching too.

  • November 19, 2008

Cool! Glad to see TwitTip is growing fast!

  • November 19, 2008

You should write a ProBlogger post on how to move a blog between servers (something I’m about to try for the first time soon).

  • November 19, 2008

    good idea – thanks

  • November 19, 2008

  • November 19, 2008

thx for the extra promotional tool; and to giving us insight into how to meet client needs when things go AWOL. Not that I noticed :-/

  • November 19, 2008

Neat. I’m really really glad for you. I hope it becomes as big as Problogger! This is so exciting.

  • November 19, 2008

I love this feature of leaving my twitter id, this way i would be more involved nice way to increase comments :P

  • November 19, 2008

The joy of using a new server. :)

Basically to move to a new server you’ll have to:

    1) Move your files to the new server
    2) Export your database and import them into the new one
    3) Change your DNS setting of your domain name pointing to the new one

This is just a general overview, perhaps Darren will post a more detailed one in the near future. :)

  • November 19, 2008

I’m really enjoying TwiTip, even if I already know some of the tips :D The concept is great, and so far all the articles have been top notch. The Twitter ID in comments is awesome too!

  • November 19, 2008

Love the addition of the Twitter id! (Keeps me from having to triple check my HTML code before every post! ;) Congrats on the huge traffic, as it’s well deserved. You’re giving insights into Twitter that you just can’t get anywhere else, so keep it up, and I can’t wait to see what you’ve got planned.

  • November 19, 2008

Twitter ID is a nice touch and congratulations on the site growing so fast.

  • November 19, 2008

Great move, Darren. I have 3 linodes, and I can’t be more satisfied with it.

  • November 19, 2008

Mr. Darren, how did you put the Twitter ID Form?

  • November 19, 2008

    Darren,
    Wowie… impressive growth!
Guess that this will result in a nice post on Problogger: “How to fast-grow a blog in 1 month and make its server wobble…

    ;) Congrats!

  • November 19, 2008

I love the new twitter id box, I have been thinking about doing this myself but hadn’t gotten around to it. Did you modify the comments.php directly or did you do it with a plugin?

  • November 19, 2008

Nice new feature with the Twitter ID’s. May just encourage me to do some commenting. :)

  • November 19, 2008

Congratulations, Darren! Fantastic growth… That’s a nice “problem” to have. :)

  • November 19, 2008

Congratulations on the success of Twitip Darren, I really enjoy your tweet tips!

  • November 19, 2008

Like the twitter ID in the form. Wanted to test it out.

  • November 19, 2008

Congratulations on the super-fast growth of TwiTip (less than a month – Wow!!!). Happy to see you’re on linode too. They provide really great service and support. (I’m hosted there too) Anyway, looking forward to more interesting posts on TwiTip.
By the way, how’s the thesis theme? I’m looking into purchasing it for my blog.

  • November 19, 2008

Nice twitter ID in comments, what a good idea. I suspect that plugin will go viral on blogs quickly!

Must be nice to be able to grow a blog so quickly, even if it does throw up teething problems! Well done.

  • November 20, 2008

    running great here in GA!

  • November 20, 2008

Wow – congrats on overgrowing a server that quickly!

I agree with some of the other comments, a ProBlogger post on moving a blog between servers might be useful for a lot of people. I did it myself not too long ago and managed, but a lot of bloggers probably haven’t.

  • November 20, 2008

You gotta spill the beans, what server or what kind of server are you moving onto? What kind of server were you on before? I think I’m going to have to switch soon and I’m thinking about getting a really powerful and fast server. Thanks Darren!

  • November 20, 2008

@MattGio dude, read the first comment! He’s getting a server at Linode. He was using GoDaddy initially.

  • November 20, 2008

I like the twitter link, good idea!
its great to see you got it moved ok! it seems faster now!

  • November 20, 2008

So this mena that you new page its giving really good impresion and its going viral. that good

  • November 20, 2008

    Hey folks,

I helped Darren out on this server move. It’s an Linode 540. We wanted the extra RAM because we’ll be putting a Rails app on the server too, and it has a tendency to eat RAM. The extra disk is also helpful, and the price is still very reasonable. The old server was shared hosting through GoDaddy.

The server is running Nginx and PHP through FastCGI. Pretty standard WordPress move: file, DB, DNS. A bunch of testing on the new plugin for the Twitter ID and the Nginx url rewriting for Wordpress and wp-supercache.

  • November 20, 2008

I just found a plugin that will let me add an extra field to the comments and have one blog serving up twitter links. Anyone else who gets twitter id’s into their comments is welcome to list their site in my link directory

  • November 20, 2008

I’m just laughing that you need a new server in 16 days. Most of us would take 16 YEARS to get to that point.

I love how your comments are in blue, and how we can add our twitter IDs. Brilliant!

  • November 20, 2008

You should have know that any site that you launch would get a ton of traffic in no time! We should be so lucky :)

  • November 20, 2008

Congratulations to Twitip! Well deserved success.

  • November 20, 2008

Outgrown your servers already?!? Microblink has been around for months and haven’t had that problem yet… and I can only assume it is a good one to have. Congrats and looking forward to many more great tips!
