I think the best advice for businesses thinking about marketing in social media is to hire a professional. Research them well, there are alot of people claiming to be experts, most are not. Ask for references, case studies, etc.

I think some of the best advice for businesses that I can give is:
1) remember it's a discussion, not a shouting match - you can't just blast your message to others without participating in discussion (and acknowledging that others are also participating), making and owning up to mistakes, showing a little give and take and humanizing your company. (re: DELL - one of their first official BLOG posts was to admit a laptop caught on fire - that's pretty ballsy but recognizing their mistake openly practically forced people to compliment them for doing it!)
2) fill in the Bio and present yourself as a true representation of your company - research on some of the most-followed and well-respected businesses in Twitter indicates that their bios contain terms like "founder" or "CEO" or even "author." Those titles mean the person speaking will have authoritative things to say about his or her company/product.
3) don't overdo it - I (and other busy professionals like me) will un-follow people who fill Tweet lists with babble all day long. I don't care that you're going to "go forage in the fridge." It's great to be human, but be respectful of the time other people have to spare to read what you stream out... again, simple research (check HubSpot.com for tools) indicates that more people follow Tweeps who average 20-24 tweets a day.

First, make sure your customers are even on Twitter. Otherwise you're talking into the abyss. Second, understand it's a two-way communication tool. You can't just post items. You have to respond and answer questions. Finally, understand its limitations. Don't use Twitter as the silver bullet in your strategy. It's another tool for you to use.

To engage with the majority of the twitter crowd be personal and say hello. Engage don't broadcast ask questions and share answers. Get the network to interact with each other.

Hi Darren. I'm currently working with two major European brands to help them (I hope) to establish a Twitter presence that will greatly benefit them and their clients and potential clients. I'm happy to share ideas / strategies / thoughts with you - one of my objectives this year is to get three businesses on board to establish and "manage" their Twitter presence, with more in future years.
If you'd like to discuss drop me an email.
I can't answer the question in 140 characters, but I did post on my blog recently about businesses and why they should be involved in social media.

Give it at least 2 weeks before passing judgment.

Don't follow people for the sake of accruing followers. Follow people who provide you with information that is useful to you.

Provide useful information and interesting links to your followers.

If someone posts on your blog, post on theirs.

Place a cap on the number of updates per day. Don't flood the homepage of followers.

If you're going to engage in long tweets, use direct message so your followers aren't forced to read your conversations with others.
