@sarahmaeblogs
Auto DM’s when you follow them. So insincere.
@drigotti
Spam. It has gotten incredibly bad. I used to check RT / trending topics to see what’s ho, but now it is almost always filled with some auto follow spam.
@cyberdad
users who tweet about getting more followers are by far the worse. I unfollow just about everyone who does that.
@mikecj
Interesting to see how this pans out, and there has been a plethora of posts about Twitter spam recently. My biggest hate is also those awful auto DM’s that try to sell something.
@jfellrath
People who just load you up with piles of names for #followfriday. Tell me WHY I should follow them, and then just feature 1 or 2 people!
@sjmonk5
Those that abbreviate WAY too much!
@thebassman
I hate auto DM’s… especially when they come from someone you’ve followed, so they auto DM you, but haven’t followed back. You shouldn’t be able to send DMs unless there’s a mutual follow… If you’re not following me, I can’t reply, so why bother.
@cyclefiend2000
long followfriday lists, and then RT the same. had to unfollow one user today, because every few seconds they were adding long follow friday lists or RT’s of previous posts.
@ContestsGuide
For me, it’s the people who hashtag just about every word. Throw in some wonky punctuation and you have a heck of a hard Tweet to read.
@RussMack
The Twitter rule about following too many people vs number of followers. Seems to be a magical thing about the number 2,000.
@spaceguy
Actually 2 things:
(1) Following me and then unfollowing me–especially if done repeatedly–before I even get a chance to see the follow notice. Do you care about me and what I have to say or are you just trying to get a bazillion followers without regard to building relationships are even shared interests?
(2) Tweet streams only say “come to my site” over and over and over and over, especially when that’s almost all the tweet stream ever says. Marketers should add value and build trust. They need to create relationships. If they add value and earn respect, THEN people will WANT to go to their site or consider buying their products and services.
Funny coincidence…I actually just tweeted about #2 before I saw @problogger’s tweet about this post.
@inplainenglish
Social media for me is all about INTERaction. So when folks choose not to follow at all and do not allow an exchange of communication with their followers, well, it’s really a one-way flow, very reminiscent of “Web 1.0.” Folks can use Twitter however they like, and others will choose to follow or not. And there are those who feel they’re still providing a service with a one-way flow of information. But I believe the idea is to become and be more social.
@DeirdreReid
My pet peeve — those who RT all the compliment tweets or #followfriday mentions they receive. It shouldn’t bother me but it’s so lame. Do they really need to RT their own validation? Take it private and thank the giver in a DM and spare the rest of us your gloating.
@thisdmnhouse
People who post outrageous numbers of posts to their blogs (in excess of 10) and then tweet links to these posts — repeatedly.
@ashbuckles
I think spammers should be on a list of their own; they’re a given. I chose People who don’t converse since spammers should be the top of everybody’s list.
@jamie – I agree with #FollowFriday. I actually think it’s a great idea but not the way it’s used. I wrote a post about my hopes back in January but it never took hold. Ah well.
@deb_mc
Tweet me something, don’t just try to sell me something. Where is the conversation? Half of my tweets are sales pitches anymore. Of course I use twitter to sell but I also try to converse.
@DMCunningham
My biggest Twitter user pet peeve (at the moment) are paid (or unpaid I guess) advertisements. There have been many good twitter users who I’ve followed (many of them private individuals – that is, not businesses or brands) than now have inserted ads into their tweet stream. This new trend of slipping ads into your tweets really is frustrating, because there were good people to follow, but I will not put up with ads.
For me, that is the quickest way to loose my respect and unfollow you. It would be different if it was a business/brand or if you have always done it – hell, even a tweet explaining that you are going to start doing it would be better – but just to start dropping ads (especially ones that have nothing to do with your typical tweet stream) is really crappy.
The spamming trending topics thing does not affect me, as I’ve found most of the trending tweets are crap, so I skim for the good stuff.
People who don’t converse don’t bother me, because if I was expecting conversation, I would email or IM them. Of course if the person used to converse, and then ignores everyone – well, that would be different but not a peeve of mine.
Twitter bullies – Report’em, block’em, and tell others to do the same.
Celebs’, really? This is a problem? Don’t follow them, it’s that easy.
@iescience
Passing off others’ tweets as your own. It really bothers me to see people copy the exact tweet from someone else and not acknowledge the originator in some way.
@WhippetSnippets
@Jamie Fellrath – I second that! Especially those that go through their ENTIRE follower list in alphabetical order.
@rarevictorian
People who dig out a quote from some famous person and post it verbatim. It’s as if they’re following the formula 80% “content” 20% promotion. Their “content” is 100% recycled from others and no value from them as an individual.
Serial retweeters.
@LJFWolffe
My pet peeve is “TwitterSpew,” for lack of a better term. Not only the #FollowFriday lists, but people who post every three minutes for half an hour, or 15 posts in as many minutes. How can I see what others are saying if their non-stop talking makes them fall off my feed? It’s my number one reason for unfollowing.
@JeffreySummers
All of the above!
@linnea4591
People who don’t converse, they just post their own stuff and that’s it is the worst in my book. Second to those who have no profile pic, don’t update and want to follow. Most of these are the ones who will be blocked!
@michaelramm
RETWEET and Serial RETWEETERS! Just post the link and add some value to it. DON’T just hit the RT button and send it on!
@DavidJGarcia
I agree with Jeffery – Everything that’s been mentioned so far, in the comments and the poll.
I’ll also add a vote for overload: If most of my Twitter stream is just one person, they’re likely to get unfollowed. I may make an occasional exception for a first-time offense from somebody at a conference.
@thisiswilson
D-Bags that post their twitter updates on facebook. You look mentally retarded with
James Appleseed
RT: @OPRAH IT’S GREAT TO BE HERE, I AM LOVING THE TWINTERNETS! #downtoearth #trillions #airbrushing
Comments:
Joe Blow: Dude, what the fuck?
James Appleseed: LUL! #It’s #the #TWITTERVERSE #MANGGGGGGG #########!!!!!!!!
@bjmendelson
I agree with Ash. I unfollow folks who don’t converse and just post their own material.
@emortiz
People who cross post updates to twitter and facebook and people who tweet constantly about the food they are eating – who gives a shit!?
@igomogul
People who ask for Retweets. If it’s for a good cause I’m alright with it, but if you’re just linking your own posts I think it comes off as self-serving. Not sure if it’s within the accepted boundaries of Twitterquette or not, just a personal pet peeve.
Greg @ iGoMogul
@kateblogs
People who post nothing but retweets; it’s the equivalent of going around a party repeating what everyone else has said, but not saying anything original yourself.
@HistoricShed
1. People who follow you to see if you will follow them back, then unfollow you.
2. Porn star wannabe followers.
3. Offers to get me 10,000 followers in a day when they only have 250 (I guess that is the spam category).
@nlawhead
People who don’t RT or reply correctly. Thx@nlawhead is the worst b/c #1 – I don’t see it #2 – others can’t click on it.
@nlawhead
@GAStroz
Hate those promoting the follower-gaining programs, clear they’re only after one thing themselves. Also those that tweet the same content multiple times / week (often quotes, or their own product / service).
Also hate the followfriday proliferators, but this is solved by setting filter in Tweetdeck to eliminate followfriday in the “All Friends” column. Helps a ton.
@sascomeditor
People who re-re-tweet a tweet of their own that’s been retweeted.
@bradvertrees
I voted for ‘other’. While spam is always a big annoyance, I get even more annoyed by people who post every little detail of their daily life to Twitter. I un-follow people who do that pretty fast.
My general rule of thumb for Twitter is that I’ll only post it if it’s truly interesting, timely and is something I’d like to read if someone else tweeted it. That’s a pretty general rule, but it prevents me from posting stuff like “I”m going to the bathroom” and “I’m stuck in traffic on such-and-such road”.
@elzeig
I hate when people post repeatedly (like 5 or 6 times) all in a row. I want to be able to see what OTHER people have to say, not just the output of the various RSS feeds you’ve set up to post to your account.
@jpwriter
All of the above, yes! Spam is crazy. I didn’t know that you could advertise in your tweets unless that’s the Magpie thing I saw splattered all over from some follows?
Constant RT of your own links. I send links to my stuff here and there, but not from three accounts over and over. Ugh.
The followfriday is overwhelming with a few folks I follow, but I ignore them. I keep getting followed by naked ladies, but I guess that’s normal. I just learned to check trending topics and it’s filled with crap (a lot).
All the comments here are very helpful to a newbie. Thanks.
@myg
1. People who whine ALL DAY in their tweets – a bad habit of many “mommy” bloggers I follow, whose blogs I actually love. It’s one thing to have a rough day and tweet that. It’s another when your entire twitter stream for weeks on end is you bitching all day about the shit we all deal with all day every day.
2. Twitter cliques, as in groups of people who tweet to one another but never seem to get anyone else in on the conversation, even when they’re directly addressed. It’s high school all over again!
@kellyolexa
Tie between Auto-DMS with lame shameless self promotion and people that RT or Tweet to follow you- and um, AREN’T FOLLOWING YOU. So Lame.
@jenstuart27
#followfriday abusers. All day long, you just get list after list of every single one of their followers. What’s the point? I just skip those.
@jessicawaters
I can’t STAND people who “auto thank you” DM me, for some reason on some days I get about 5 of those from people that I didn’t even follow. I send them a snarky DM back and then UNfollow them immediately. (I wish I could figure out how to stop this from happening—the DMs from people I didn’t follow— if anyone has any suggestions, I would really appreciate it)
I would rather get nothing from someone than one of those, really.
argh. Don’t get me started.
@PamDH
yes, and yes and yes some more. As much as I’d love to be retweeting you all! LOL My other bug bear is recognising that someone just has 5 tweets that are original and so they use the same tweet over and over again.
I am with the ‘conversing’ aspect of twitter I thought that the point was to make connections. I have made some good virtual friends via twitter very valuable.
@feliciaslounge
People who tweet about bodily functions, including poop, head colds, the flu, farting, etc.
@DavidDCain
People whose entire Twitter streams start with “RT.”
@flagstaffnews
My Peeve is the same spam message auto tweeted.
@SuSaw
Help me here. Is “see my pictures” spam? What’s up with the ladies who follow me or an 11-year old who’s following athletes? Hate ‘em. If that’s spam, that’s my biggest peeve.
@moonbridgebooks
Great points here. Yes, I’m starting to hate followfridays. Some people seem to followfriday their entire following list! And the twitter-facebook auto crossposting is really annoying on fb (add the selective twitter app on fb, please). A pet peeve is those who autofollow based on keywords. If I tweet once about a ball game (and I don’t like sports), why does some ball team follow me – duh.
@nhangen
Sure, there are some annoying user patterns on Twitter, but for the most part none of it really bothers me that much. I can unfollow anyone I chose, and filter the Tweets from users I want to see. Yeah, spammers suck, but it only takes 1 click to get rid of them.
Relax, it’s just Twitter!
@technical_itch
As others have mentioned I find the automated “thanks for following” messages very annoying. What’s the point of this? It’s just an automated message without a personal touch. I prefer to follow humans, not some manufactured message.
@sideculture
Those who RT the same things over and over again… I’m talking RTing the same link 5-10 times in one day… Especially when it’s their own link. I recently unfollowed someone who constantly flooded my stream with those kinds of Tweets. I put up with it for awhile, especially because some of that person’s Tweets were genuinely interesting/valuable, but it just got too overwhelming.
@culinarycory
My biggest peeve is people who follow excessive amount of people just for the sake of saying they have that many followers.
@cochrankat
I second LJF Wolffe…”twitterspew” is a great term that covers a multitude of excesses.
People who follow me just so that I’ll follow them. This is always evident in the fact that we have absolutely nothing in common. Tip: Don’t bother; I won’t follow back.
@chick7388
I HATE when people tweet aimlessly every couple hours. If you are going to tell the world about your life either make it something interesting or do it in a manner that makes you want to read it. I don’t want to read about someone 6 or 7 times a day when they have nothing to say.
@jordanstone
pretentious tweets about one’s self. http://tweetingtoohard.com/ captures it brilliantly.
@blogtillyoudrop
Spammers – people who who follow tons of people but never update!
@writerschatroom
The people who do nothing but retweet other people. If you don’t have something worthwhile to say, SHUT UP!
@LoPaul
My Twitter pet peeve is people who follow me, I follow back, and then they unfollow me! I still haven’t found a good tool that tells me who has unfollowed me recently. Any good suggestions?
@sarahjbray
Definitely spammers. I don’t have time to weed through legitimate followers to see who I’d like to follow because there are so many spammers. Auto-follow (and auto un-follow) is on for me for that very reason, even though I hate it. I just won’t give 7 hours of my time a week to spammers! I use TweetDeck to favorite the people who are actually interesting.
@juliemc77
While spammers are my #1 pet-peeve, my second has to be the people who don’t take a few minutes to write a mini-bio. I see this time and time again, from legitimate Twitter folk, who don’t have a bio. They tweet and re-tweet religiously about some really good stuff, so why can’t they find a few minutes to write that bio?!?!
@bradtee
I’m new to Twitter – still finding my way around, and aiming to be a good twitterverse citizen. Obviously, no one likes spam – but I’m seeing a lot of people just blasting out the same get rich quick schemes. It’s like standing in the middle of a crowded room and just screaming out random sell messages at passer-bys. Epic fail!
@spiffy
Everyone before me have listed some apt peeves. All these things bother me at different levels.
Of late, one of my biggest peeves has been when a blogger tweets their newest blog post. Then RTs the RTs of that tweet. Then RE-tweets the new blog post 4 hours later AND RTs the RTs of that tweet. And repeats this process for two additional days.
Oh. And I don’t like those “I got 450,000 new followers using blah-blah-blah.com” tweets. Those are annoying.
@MatthewMichaelM
FollowFridays…they get to my nerves in so many ways.
